Influenza and You

You may not know about the history of influenza, but you definitely have had the flu at some point in your life. The story of influenza or flu was noted in 1892 when a German scientist, Richard Pfeiffer, isolated a small bacterium from the noses of patients with flu.
Scientists originally thought the illness was caused by bacteria, but in the 1930s they identified it as a virus, about a decade after a pandemic. It was only after this that an effective vaccine could be developed.
As of today, the flu has become a seasonal thing. Yet, no one would like to catch it. Through an understanding of influenza, we can know that there are many strains of influenza virus as it mutates very rapidly.
The virus can be easily caught as it travels via the air and lives on surfaces. Getting the flu can also result in serious complications, particularly in vulnerable people like young children, older persons, pregnant women, and people with medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease.
The most common complication is pneumonia, typically caused by a secondary bacterial infection.
One can stay protected by living well with hygienic measures, but one of the best forms of protection against a serious complication of seasonal flu is through vaccination.
As life is filled with many urgent tasks and responsibilities, you may not have time to keep yourself well via adequate sleep, good nourishment, regular physical exercises, and staying hydrated. So, it is up to you and your family to decide whether flu vaccination is right for you.
